Food & Beer Friday :: We're pretty steamy.

This week, I didn't want to disappoint you with no Food & Beer Friday!  And what's really exciting is that this is a California beer, and we got to visit the brewery!

I mentioned that we visited Anchor Brewing Company while we were in San Francisco.  This brewery has a really cool story, and I can't do it justice.  Check out their story here!

One of my favorite beers was the Anchor Steam beer.  Unfortunately I had to improvise a bit with my beer picture this week, so you do not get to see the "thick creamy head" that the brewery describes this beer as having.  It is a deep amber color.

Anchor is really a historic beer site in San Francisco.  It's a must see if you are there.  They brew all their beers in these copper barrels which they bought from Germany (if I remember correctly).  The Steam beer is something special though.

[Open fermentation tanks]

Those are indeed tanks of beer that are fermenting.  That's the foam you can see on top.  Here is Anchor's history of the beer:
"Anchor Steam® Beer derives its unusual name from the 19th century when “steam” was a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. While the origin of the name remains shrouded in mystery, it likely relates to the original practice of fermenting the beer on San Francisco’s rooftops in a cool climate. In lieu of ice, the foggy night air naturally cooled the fermenting beer, creating steam off the warm open pans. Once a nickname for any West Coast beer brewed under these conditions, today the name “steam” is a trademark of Anchor Brewing and applies only to the singular process and taste of our flagship brand - San Francisco’s original Anchor Steam® Beer. The classic of American brewing tradition since 1896."
Since they aren't allowed to just keep beer on the roof, they have the special room above to ferment the beer. Not only is the story of the beer ridiculously cool, the beer is yummy too!

[Tasting room]

[The wood and craftsmanship at the tasting room bar is just beautiful]

[You get to taste so many beers...make sure to carve out a 1-2 hour span of time for your tour and tasting]

Anchor Steam beer was definitely a favorite, but I wish I had known about Anchor beers before.  We got to taste all of the beers in the first picture.  I'm looking forward to exploring the others a bit more.

When it comes to food, I don't have a dessert or chocolate for you like I did a couple of weeks ago.  Nonetheless, recommendations say that with its "cleanness of a lager and complexity and fruit notes of an ale," it pairs perfectly with your typical summer foods like burgers and barbecue.

Have you visited Anchor Brewing before?

Do you have a favorite Anchor Beer?

San Francisco :: Take 2

After getting sufficiently intoxicated on our first night in San Francisco, we actually didn't sleep in too late on our second day.  While adjusting to the time difference, we got up most days between 8 and 9 (which is between 11 and 12 east coast time).  By the time we actually got ready and hopped on the public transportation, it was a bit later.  We found a breakfast spot near our first appointment of the day.

We ate our brunch at Sally's.  I got the chilaquiles which were AH-mazing!  Tortilla chips cooked with scrambled eggs with homemade salsa and guac on the side.  D got the huevos, but I liked mine better.  I would definitely recommend this cute little cafĂ©.

We hung around Sally's for a while since our appointment to tour Anchor Brewing.  We were able to walk around the city while we waited.

The weather was just beautiful in ole San Fran!  No fog; it looked like this for both of our days.  After walking around a bit, we headed over to Anchor Brewing Company for our tour.

I'm going to share more about Anchor for tomorrow's Food & Beer Friday!  I'll tell you this much, a lot of this happened (especially for a tour)...

We ended up at Anchor for so long that we bypassed lunch (which was unfortunate and ended up being a theme throughout our trip).  Before our first blogger meet up of the trip, we headed over for even more beer at City Beer.

And this is where things get really fun!  Claire was sweet enough pick D and I up, and we all made our way over to 21st Amendment.

You didn't think I could leave without having one of my favorite summer beers?  We were too busy chatting and laughing to really take many more pictures.  Claire was so fun and sweet!  Um, she even gave me a couple of books! #win  I am so happy that we were able to make our meet-up happen!

I need my inhaler for these hills.

In case you missed the overview of our trip via Instagram, we started in the wonderful city of San Francisco and ended in Coronado.  I'll be honest, our vacations revolve heavily around eating and drinking...not so much sight seeing.  Prepare for an onslaught of drinks we drank and places we ate.  Let me start at the beginning.

We used Airbnb to rent out an apartment in the city.  After braving the hills (and taking the worst route via public transportation) and desperately needing my inhaler post lugging my suitcase up said hills, we arrived at our apartment.  On to drinking time!

Toronado is a renowned beer bar in San Francisco.  D says this is a spot that the locals go to and the staff doesn't mess around.  Have your cash and beer order ready at the bar.

The beers are going to be craft, so don't go looking for your Blue Moon or Bud Light.  We started with Russian River Blind Pig IPAs, which we can't get in North Carolina.

[First beer in California!]

Then we headed over to Magnolia Pub & Brewery, which was also within walking distance.

I was a huge fan of Magnolia!  The beers were solid, but the food was delicious (which will obviously sell me on a spot)!

We topped our stomachs off with a little cheese and meats while we waited for our dinner reservations. We had gotten a recommendation to try SPQR.  I would most definitely recommend it to anyone visiting San Francisco.  It ranked as one of my top three meals of the trip.

Wine is really the specialty at SPQR.  It was nice to switch it up from beer for a bit.  Our waitress was really knowledgeable about wine and assisted us in choosing the perfect wine to pair with our squid ink pasta (with crab, shrimp, and trout roe) and smoked fettuccini (with sea urchin, bacon, and a quail egg).

And while I can not remember the wine name, I know ours was referred to as an orange wine.  I was in love with it!  I'm going to do some research in the future to figure out the name of the wine and track it down.

Never hurts to end your night with a little espresso and dessert.  While we crashed after dinner that night, I promise we did a bit more sight seeing (and a lot more drinking) on our second day in San Fran.
